The secrets of the KRAS - Karst region

On today’s excursion we will try to show you the “Karst” region from different perspectives. We will start by visiting the ancient town of Štanjel. The most dominant features of the village are the Castle and the Church of Saint Daniel, which make Štanjel so remarkable. While walking through the narrow streets, the houses built in stone are telling you the story of stonemasons, who portrayed their experience of the Karst through stone. The streets end up in small squares, which were once popular meeting places for the locals.

To develop a taste for the region we will visit the village of Kobjeglava. After a short walk through the village we visit the prosciutto producer in Kobjeglava. Prosciutto (“Karst” ham) is a top class culinary product and geographical and culinary tradition in the Karst. We’ll stop for a snack lunch, which will mainly consist of Karst prosciutto and Teran, a very distinctive red wine that is unique to the region.

The tour continues to the world famous stud farm Lipica, which is the cradle of the Lipizzaners horses, the gracious “four- legged aristocrats”. Lipica is situated in a green oasis in the middle of the Karst region. It was founded in the year 1580 by the Austrian Archduke Charles the ll and nowadays proudly continues more than 400-years-old tradition of breeding the famous white horses. A performance of the classical Spanish Riding school is an unforgettable experience.
